Sharing a Light of Hope: Solar Power Illuminates the Future for Orphaned Elephants in Botswana
In the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana, lies a beautiful sanctuary offering refuge to orphaned elephant calves. These gentle giants, tragically separated from their mothers due to poaching, find solace and care at this remarkable NGO-run facility called Elephants Haven. Partnering with the sanctuary, our company has installed a photovoltaic (Pv) system, powered entirely by the sun’s energy, generously provided by Solar MD, in partnership with Now3. This system not only provides clean, reliable electricity for the sanctuary’s operations, but also offers a glimpse into a future powered by renewable energy and sustainability.
The impact extends far beyond the sanctuary walls. The neighbouring communities who co-exist with these magnificent creatures are also benefiting from the project. The surplus solar power generated is shared with the community, empowering them with access to a clean and sustainable source of electricity. This collaborative effort fosters a sense of shared responsibility and empowers the community to become active participants in conservation efforts.
Each orphaned elephant receives dedicated care from a designated caregiver, forging an unbreakable bond that transcends the boundaries of species. With the help of solar power, the sanctuary ensures a safe and nurturing environment for these vulnerable calves as they grow and heal. Including powering major activities within the sanctuary such as lights for night vision for the animals, water pumping as well as powering security systems including CCTV cameras and electric fences as the sanctuary protects the young ones from wild poachers.
